In a new study published in the international journal Nature, researchers from the university of Copenhagen have discovered new functions of the histone H1, raising awareness of how cells protect and repair DNA damage. Due to the presence of histones, DNA strands can be wrapped around histones to form nucleosome structures that can be further assembled into chromatin.
The strands of DNA inside a cell are about two meters long, and cells can compress them 100,000 times by wrapping them around histones to form chromatin. Generally speaking, there are five histones in cells, four of which are core histones. Their functions have been extensively studied. In addition to playing an important role in chromatin assembly, they also play an important role in many processes related to DNA coding, including DNA damage repair.
The fifth histone H1 is responsible for binding DNA between nucleosomes, but the function of histone H1 is not fully understood at present. In this study, the researchers used mass spectrometry to find that histone H1 can also help recruit injury repair proteins. Currently, international research on histones mainly focuses on core histones, while histone H1 has received less attention, mainly because we have not realized that it also affects DNA damage repair process.
